She’s What’s Happening: Grace Jones’ Surreal Citroen Commercial [Video]

Grace Jones Citroën CX

Over the weekend, the Afropunk festival happened in New York City. Giant banners proclaimed “No sexism, no racism, no ableism, no homophobia, no fatphobia, no transphobia, no hatefulness,” like an expanded version the sign hanging at the door of Berkeley’s 924 Gilman Street. With, you know, a bit of corporate help from Red Bull and Coors Light. Lenny Kravitz, Kelis, Suicidal Tendencies, and Sacramento noise terrorists Death Grips turned in sets, but the talk of the event turned out to be the performance by Grace Jones.

Jones has always excelled at pulling off the strange, outré, and avant garde, futzing with gender, messing with fashion, making records, and even taking a turn as a Bond girl in A View to a Kill. When that film’s theme composers, Duran Duran, split into Power Station and Arcadia, Jones performed with the latter. Versatility, thy name is Grace.

Some body-negative pantywaists were shocked at Jones’ weekend topless hula-hoop performance at Afropunk, suggesting that 67-year-old ladies have no business working it like that onstage. We say if Iggy Pop (whose “Nightclubbing” Jones famously covered) can still stalk a stage sans shirt, why can’t Grace? Jones does what she wants, and pop culture is a better, broader place due to her efforts. Don’t believe us? Scope this surreal Citroën CX spot she did back in the ’80s. It remains one of our all-time favorite car commercials.

2016 Volvo XC90, Nissan Maxima Recalled for Airbag Defects, Fuel Leaks

2016-Volvo-XC90-T6-PLACEMENT

That whole adage to wait a model year before buying a redesigned car is not without truth, even in the days of highly computerized quality control. To that point: The all-new 2016 Volvo XC90 and 2016 Nissan Maxima, only months in production, have been recalled for two fairly serious problems, one related to faulty airbags and the other to fuel leaks.

On the 2016 XC90, the side curtain airbags may not fully inflate for the third row passengers. The interior trim on the D-pillars can block the airbag during a crash, a problem Volvo discovered in July during a Euro NCAP crash test. Early this month, Volvo halted XC90 sales on models with third row seating and still has not made repairs to these cars, some of which have been halted at the factory. A total of 3911 are affected in the U.S. No accidents or injuries have been reported. Owners won’t be notified until mid-September.

2016 Nissan Maxima

On 5458 Maxima models, the fuel tank has an O-ring that may not be properly sealed and can cause a leak during a crash where the fuel filler pipe meets the tank. Nissan currently has a stop-sale on all 2016 Maximas built from March 19th (the start of production) to June 2nd. The company said repairs won’t begin until late September and that it was investigating other Nissan models for this potential problem.

NHTSA notified Nissan of the fuel leak during a crash test on July 10 and told dealers to temporarily hold Maxima models in stock on July 14th. The stop-sale has been in effect since July 29th. The company does not yet have an exact remedy in place, and no accidents or injuries have been reported.

2016 Dodge Charger and Challenger SRT Hellcat Get More Devilish Pricing

2015 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat

After re-assessing its sales strategy surrounding the awesome SRT Hellcat variants of the Challenger and Charger for 2016, and increasing production to discourage dealer markups, Dodge is laying out the cars’ new prices. And guess what? The cars are more expensive—quite a bit more expensive, in fact, offsetting somewhat any possible reduction in dealers’ overcharging for the ultra-popular models.
Dodge Will Build More Than Twice As Many 2016 SRT Hellcats

The 2016 Challenger SRT Hellcat will start at $65,190, $4200 more than last year’s model, while the four-door Charger SRT Hellcat sees a $3650 bump to $68,640. Dodge says that newly standard navigation and leather seats represent a $2490 value baked into the new prices, but that still leaves a little extra meat on the bone for the corporate coffers. It’s not exactly egregious, and along with the doubling of Hellcat production for the 2016 model year, it should help equalize Dodge’s supply of cars with consumers’ still-rabid demand for them. And besides, it’s not like you can find a 707-hp anything for similar money elsewhere!

Chevrolet Cobalt Recalled Again for Airbags, Not Related to Ignition Switch

2008 Chevrolet Cobalt LT

Some Chevrolet Cobalt owners who repaired their ignition switches must now worry about their cars disabling the airbags again, this time for entirely different reasons.

According to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the 2010 Cobalt has wiring harnesses in the doors that were improperly installed at the factory and can cause the side curtain airbags to become inoperative in a crash. A total of 59,474 cars are affected. The wiring harnesses connect the side airbag sensors and can “chafe” against the window regulator when the window is lowered, leading to a short and an airbag warning light on the dash.

GM began investigating the problem in January after the company decided to look at warranty repairs for the sensors and wiring harnesses. The automaker did not say how many cars had been repaired or if any injuries or accidents had been reported. GM also did not mention the Pontiac G5, which shares nearly all parts with the Cobalt, or any other model year. Dealers will start replacing the wiring harness and route the wires correctly starting this month.

Porsche 911 GT3 RS review

Although the RS badge has a longer history, Porsche itself measures the Renn Sport versions of the 911 GT3 from 2003, when it stripped surplus weight from the 996-generation model and had its race-spawned Mezger flat six hyperventilating on ram-air ducts.

2016 Nissan 370Z Coupe Test: An Analog GT for a Digital World

2016 Nissan 370Z

Other than swapping an ashtray for a cup holder and Datsun badges for Nissan medallions, the Z-car has harkened to the same formula for 46 years. A popularly priced two-seat GT with six-cylinders, a long hood, a short deck, a fastback roofline, and a rear hatch aptly describes both 2016 and 1970 models. That’s Corvette-caliber staying power. Ford GT Test Mule Spotted on Detroit Freeway [Video]

Ford-GT-Syndo
-YouTuber “Dr. Scandalous” caught a pretty amazing sight during what would otherwise have been an everyday Detroit commute: A gnarly looking Ford GT test mule cruising among regular traffic. This is something you don’t see every day—and something that pretty much nobody outside of Ford’s skunkworks has seen before.

As first reported by Patrick George at Jalopnik, the lucky YouTuber seems to have been in the perfect spot to catch Ford’s future hypercar cruising the streets in the two videos embedded below. The test car looks rough—check out those taillights, which look to be universal trailer lights found at any hardware store, not the intercooler-venting halo lights of the show car—but curiously the unfinished bodywork doesn’t seem to be wearing any camouflage at all.

Can you imagine seeing this in your mirror on your boring drive?

GT-inline

Our Detroit-based colleagues have tentatively identified this stretch of road as the M-39 Southfield Freeway, which runs just past Ford’s test track in Dearborn, Michigan. With the production vehicle slated to arrive in late 2016 as a 2017 model, we figure you’ll be seeing a lot more of them on this patch of road—and at racetracks worldwide.
